My favorite hunting rifle would have to be or should I say USED to be was my 30-06 Weatherby. It was an all around gun till my sling broke off while I was hunting coyotes. The rifle fell back wards and it broke the stock. I am now turning it into a 6.5x284.

Can't say I've had a whole lot of experience hunting with other rifles but the old 30-30 I used this year was awesome!

My poor old 06 will always be the only one I use. I can load it from small game to whatever I may want kill. Still in my opinion the most versatile caliber around. 100 years old and going as strong as ever.

Hey all! I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents on rifle calibers. I really agree with Carl (from Winston), the 30-06 is "tried and true". It's really hard to beat the versatility of something you can reload from 110 to 250 grain bullets.WOW!And it's been around so long you can get bullets everywhere. I have a win.model 70 .300 mag. but for hunting in Ore. don't really think the extra powder is really necessary ..... 180 grain 30-06 perfect. stdpurko

Originally shown in American Rifleman March 2006 By the time you read this, one of the aforementioned lever-action legends will no longer be made. On January 18-- two days before we shipped this issue to the printer-- U.S. Repeating Arms Co., the maker of Winchester Rifles and shotguns, announced its New Haven, Conn., plant will close March 31. The Model 94 and Model 70 rifles and the Model 1300 shotgun will no longer be manufactured. It was a shock that left our entire staff speechless and with a profound sense of loss. "Many efforts were made to improve profitability at the manufacturing facility in New Haven, and the decision was made after exhausting all available options," stated a release from the company. Winchester over-under and semi-automatic shotguns and Limited Edition rifles will continue to be offered. A Winchester representative also advised that there are no plans to make Model 94s or 70s anywhere else at this time. So ends an era that spanned 140 years... and a legend. We'll have more on the loss of two of our most beloved guns -- icons in the hearts and minds of generations of American shooters and hunters -- in the coming months.

I have an old Wichester Model 88. If you are familiar with the Mod. 88 you will know that it is lever action but has a locking bolt mechanism the same as a bolt action and has been said to be the most accurate lever action rifle ever made. It was built in .243, .284 & .308. I have the .308 and have killed 3 bears, 3 elk and I don't know how many deer. I have had people tell me it is not big enough for elk but I beg to differ. I believe it is not all in the weapon but in quality optics & the shooters capabilities also. I now have it semi-retired because my wife bought me a 300 Weatherby Mag for Christmas. It is more than I need in Oregon but I want to go to Alaska so I am going to use it for a while to get used to it.
