I have been trying to take a cougar the past few weeks and have come up dry. ODFW says they are now at all elevations but have not seen anything. I'm open for suggestions and helpful hints.

I don't have any advice for you with cougars. I have seen a lot of them at different times and areas but don't know much about hunting them. They are very elusive. I have seen a few that I definately could have shot but didn't have a tag. Have you trying calling? I have talked to a few people that have had them come in when calling Yotes.

I have tried calling them, mainly because that's what I love to do is call predators. However have not had any success yet. I will keep trying, they can't elude me forever.

Couple of ideas for ya. There is alote of rim rock area in central Oregon, try setting up early in the morning along a good stretch of rim rock and start calling. Im sure you havent came across a freash kill yet but if you do that would also be a good place to start calling.
Here is what odfw said....
COUGAR: Cougar are reported regularly in the Maury, Ochoco, and Grizzly units, at all elevations and habitat types. Early season rifle and archery hunters should look for sign, particularly on Ochoco National Forest lands in areas frequented by elk and deer.

Hey Buck I have a buddy who goes up to Northpoint a lot. They have been seeing a lot of bear sign and seen some bear up on top but they have seen some cats just down from Big Summit Prarie moving up towards the top. there is a lot of rim rock up on top and they have seen them tight on the side roads off of the main road. May be worth checking out

Is it legal now to kill cougar? We call them mt lion here and they're takin over.. killin stock, afraid for small children and we're under the impression that you still have to kill and dispose of them on the QT. There was a young one a couple of years ago commin down to the edge of town from the game preserve and killin this guy's chicken's. He called and called trying to get something done, and was afraid to kill it for fear of horrific fine's. So.... he live trapped it and called the game people, and still got fined for even trappin the dang thing. Other's have them cruise their land, and their grandkids have to walk a ways to catch the school bus and they're afraid for the kids so walk them to the bus stop.. armed. They've taken new born foal's and calves... even a (horse) riding trail near a large city issued a warning not to ride as a mt lion was seen there... Although it's denied, it's said that some years ago now the govt turned a bunch of them loose and you'd best not kill them.. so what's the story nowdays??? Can we get rid of them now without fear of fine's, jail, or both? ?

Every state is different Missy....I cant say weather or not it legal there but here you can still kill a cougar with out a tag if it is going after your live stock or if the cat is treating your life... I'm sure if enough people start to complain there that they will be forced to do something...Such as opening a season or hire pro hunters to than out the population...I know I would not stand for them kill my livestock but hey everyone is diffirent...If unsure talk to your local fish and wildlife department...

BB I have, but it's been a few years ago now. He told me it's illegal to kill them but he did say "off the record" if it was attacking my stock to shoot the bastige.. which I would have anyway with or without his consent.
I wasn't aware it's a state by state thing with them.. I thought it was federal. Anyway, they need GONE
