So what is your max distance to shoot a game animal?

For me I wouldn't shoot anything past 400 yards with my 30.06 and for the 6.5x284 I wouldn't shoot anything past 500 yards.

Im comfortable to 400 as long as I know where my rifle/ammo combo is hitting at that range.

Yeah, 400 sounds about right. I know I am dead on at 200, 4" low at 300 and 12" low at 400. I could go farther but at that range I think I would just as well sneak closer. They shouldnt even know you are around at that range. Just my .02

my current pet is a 6.5-284 the only trouble with it is that my 140 gr bullets can at times be thrown around by up/down drafts when shooting in canyons on windy days. my other little project is in a 338 and i hope with a 300 gr bullet going 2875 or so i can beat then drafts

yeah right now i'm shooting 51.5 grs of vv-n165, wlr primer, with 140gr VLD about .015 - .020 off the lands. i'm getting about 2930 with an ES of about 25. just start a few grs lighter as this load is just a bit warm in my gun. but i'm guessing that your shooting a shorter barrel than me by a bit (mines 32") and i know that a lot of guys are useing h4350 with good luck and i would start out with that at about 46-47 grs

Guess I'm the odd duck here. Don't recall ever having to shoot a deer over 100yds. and way under 50yds. with a muzzleloader. That's pretty much the way I prefer it.
