I was hoping that knowing hunters i would get some opinions We all have at least one.no opinions about my stupidity though. I went deer hunting with a general deer tag in the Silvies, Murderers Creek area. I have no elk experience and was hunting alone so I didn't get an elk tag, the $370 was an influence also. Any ways I was siting on a well used trail When a 6x6 bull came within 25 yard of me. It didn't know I was there and I watched the most amazing thing Ive seen walk away. On the other side of the mountain, about 2.5 miles by elk trail I found another trail leading from willow lined creek bed up the mountain leading toward where I 1st saw the 6x6. This trail was lined with several years worth of rubs some were very fresh all white with pitch just starting. Also in the creek bed I found a dead 5x6 in velvet I think it was shot by some dude with a .17hmr a couple months earlier. I found a broken box of shells about 150 yards away. Anyways to my Question. Are elk in this area home bodies it seems they hang out there? Is it worth going back? Ive got the elk bug now. Its all I think of. Sorry for the long story any advice would sure help.

If there are lots of rubs in the area then it is an area that the bullls are in during the rut. We have found that the bulls will be in the same areas (relatively) each year during the rut. It would probably be a good idae to revisit this spot in the future.

That would be a great spot to start. The elk do migrate out for the winter but from the sounds of the sign there, will be elk there in years to fallow. Sounds like a great place for an archery hunt. You might even get lucky on a rifle hunt if it hasn't snowed yet but generally they are on the move in november , for the low country. It should be a great starting place either way you decide to go.

Sounds like you have a great place to start. I have found that Elk are creatures of habit. They seem to run in cycles. You may not see them in the same place 2 or 3 days in a row but they usually seem to move back through the same area every 6 or 7 days. But you have to get to them before the snow flies. Once the snow starts they will start to migrate out to the valleys and will cover a lot of ground in a day or 2. Hope this helps and good luck!
