Waking up at 4:00 in the morning is just not right in my book!!! But when it's hunting season I do my best. You get up early, make coffee, get dressed and load the truck up. By 4:30 your leaving the driveway, yes a half hour, I may be a woman but thats what hats are for. We get to our favorite hunting spot (to which you scout and watch the elk before the season opens) by 5:30 when the sun is coming up. The dew is on the grass, the air is crisp, and it's a little chilly but you enjoy it because you know by 11:00 your gonna be stripping off the layer under your camos. We had seen the elk the day before from a different ridge and we were really hoping that they were still there, so we went the long way in to be sneaky. It wasn't a bad walk at all getting the spot where all the action was waiting for us. Packing our bows and a fanny pack down a road for a mile was the easiest we had actually done the prior 4 days we had been hunting. As we near the landing that we had seen the elk, the fresh sign was thick and I was getting very excited!! The elk beds were still dry and the sweet smell of elk was in the air. I knock an arrow, get my face mask, and give a big smile to my husband. We get on there fresh tracks that ended up going over the edge of an old landing down into this steep maybe 2 year old clearcut. I think at that time my hopes went way down, you could jump and land on the road (ya road) below us about 300 yards. But they quickly went back up knowing that there was a road below us, even not knowing if it was drivable road. Standing there taking in the view my husband decides to let out a bugle (to which he is very good at). We listen.....and listen........we hear twig break. "Do one more bugle" I said. So he did.....and we listened........and by god we get a bugle right back!!! My heart starts beating out of my chest!!! "He's coming quick" my husband says, "Go down there by that tree, he's gonna pop out on the tree line". I quickly (as quick as you can with jello legs) go down to the tree, to which ended up being the bulls bed, I get my rang finder out and range some trees and stumps that were between me and the tree line. While I'm doing this my husband is up on the landing raking some twigs and really getting this bull hot!!! The bull was just chuckling and snorting thinking that there was another bull coming in to get his cows!!! I get the farthest range of 32 yards!! Dang piece of cake, my 8 year old couldn't miss this one!!! Before I knew it I heard the bull brush up against some slick leaf and he was close, so I get up on one knee and draw my bow back. Man, it seemed like forever, but I was comfortable, I wasn't shaking and it was all falling into place. I see a horn tip coming out between some trees, then another, and another, and before I knew it there he was!! Head on at 30 yards!! What a rack!!! He was awesome!! Five points on side, perfectly symmetrical. I am by far a horn hunter but I would love to have this one on my wall!!! My husband stops raking and it gets silent.....Just one more step....then he would be broadside....turn....just one more step....oh come on......then.....he bolted so fast I didn't even know what happened. I was still at full draw. I slowly let down, turn around, and there is my husband with a perfect silhouette. The bull saw him and knew that it just wasn't right. We decided to go in the trees after him, slowly and sneaking every step. Stopping and listening. Thank goodness it was all down hill!! Before we know it we come out on the road. Owell, I thought because that was enough excitement for one day, at-least for me. Then my husband decides to walk down the road to see if we can find where the elk may have crossed, and just like a switch BAM there they were!! We were actually in the middle of the whole heard of around 20. The twigs were snapping and the cows were mewing, the forest just exploded!!!! My husband to which is obviously faster than me knocks an arrow and takes off walking very fast down the road. I guess you call it "getting caught with your pants down". Well, mine were around my ankles. I knock an arrow and being only 5 feet tall I was moving my legs as fast as I could staying about 30 yards behind. All of a sudden my husband stops, I see a cow getting ready to cross right in front of him!! He's gonna get one!!!! Yeah, I knew we weren't going home empty handed today!!! I stop to watch, as he draws back, the cow goes to cross the road 20yards in front of him. He waits for the perfect "quartering away" shot. He shoots, and for some reason his arrow hits her, but way to high!!!! He has never done such a cruddy shot!!! What the heck happened? But she was still going!! And she was going up where we just came from!! Oh heck no, I thought, So I draw back and let it rip!!! She dropped turned around, took a couple steps and came to rest about 10 yards off the road!! Wow!!! Ya know, I will probably never be able to do that shot again. It was awesome!! But to end the story, we gutted it out, walked back 2 miles to the truck and drove around to the other end of the road, to which the gate was open, and drove in about a mile to where she was. We did get her out whole thanks to some rope, a block, and my truck.
