I'm headed down to the Rogue River next week to do some fishing and hunting. I've got a SW Spring Bear Tag - although I've never hunted them before - and am planning on wandering some of the areas in the Sixes Unit.
I'm bringing my 7mm with 175grain bullets. Basically, I guess that I'm going to scout out clear cuts, grassy fields and look for general "sign"... Does anyone have good tips when it comes to shot placement, field care (skinning), meat prep, etc?
Anything would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Bryan

shot placement is like any other (in the ribs behind the shoulder 'any where in the front quater.)as far as the hide goes it just depends on what you are going to do but in general scrape all the fat of and salt it very well then freeze if your going to be a while getting to the taxidermist. The meat needs to be cooled fairly rapidly, or it will spoil. .I bone it out and put it in the fridge.
Where are you going to be fishing at? I am very familiar with the southern oregon coast. I will pm a spot to ya....

I'm thinking about Fishing around Huntley Park & Lobster Creek. As for areas for Bear Hunting, areas off the Lower Rogue River Trail will probably be my first option since they are BLM land.
Non-iodized salt, right? Also, any recommendations on Taxidermists? If I have any luck, maybe make a rug of it... if I can't find any this month, hopefully I'll be able to scout some good areas for a try in May or some Elk/Blacktail hunting in the Fall.
Also, how about time of day? Most people have said dawn/dusk?

just a reminder that there is no bear hunting within 1 mile of the Rogue from Graves creek down to Lobster creek.

So I got back yesterday from about 5 days in the Lower Rogue River area. I wandered several logging roads in the morning and evening hours (6:30am to 10am; 4pm to dusk), and fished the incoming tides in the early afternoons.
I was suprised at how many blackberry bushes lined the roadsides... still too early for fruit, but it looks like a promising spot when the temperatures rise and they begin to bud. I also came across several grassy glades. There was plenty of sign for lots of wildlife.
I came across several Wild Turkeys, a heard of 12 Elk and spotted a small (1yr old, probably... his ears were high on his head + no belly) bear. The Roosevelt Elk were incredible, lots of sign everywhere, tons of fresh tracks (rain in the evening + muddy conditions), and random grunts from the bush. The bears were a little hard to hone in on.
Didn't get one on this trip, but definitley will be back later in May. The fishing wasn't too bad either. Landed 3 steelhead around Lobster creek and hooked into a nice Springer that wen't to a not-so-friendly sealion.
I'm thinking about trying the area around Klamath Falls in a couple of weeks (I'll be down there for buisiness) anyone hunted for bear there, any suggestions?
Thanks for the tips!

Yeah, I guess you're right - it's a S. Central hunt... looks like I'll just concentrate in the Rogue Area.
Thanks for the heads up!
